WHAID Partners with Mae Fah Luang Foundation to Launch Pilot Forest Restoration and Green Area Development in WHA Industrial Estates, Advancing Toward Net Zero 2050
WHA Group, through WHA Industrial Development PLC. (WHAID), Thailand’s leading developer of world-class industrial estates, has signed an agreement with the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage to jointly implement a forest restoration and green space development project within WHA’s industrial estates. The signing ceremony was held at WHA Tower, marking the beginning of a long-term collaboration to increase carbon sinks and foster biodiversity in line with WHA Group’s Net Zero 2050 commitment.
This year, the project will be piloted in three WHA industrial estates: WHA Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate 2 (WHA ESIE 2), WHA Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate 3 (WHA ESIE 3) in Chonburi, and WHA Rayong 36 Industrial Estate in Rayong covering a total area of approximately 108 rai (over 17 hectares). This initiative aims to expand green areas, restore biodiversity, improve soil health, create new habitats, and provide sustainable community benefits in surrounding areas.
The collaboration brings together the expertise of two organizations with shared visions. WHAID, which develops and manages 15 industrial estates in Thailand and one in Vietnam, has embedded the concept of “Smart Eco Industrial Estates” into its operations, ensuring industrial development is modern, environmentally responsible, and socially inclusive. The Mae Fah Luang Foundation will contribute its renowned knowledge from the successful Doi Tung Development Project in Chiang Rai, leveraging over three decades of experience in forest restoration, regenerative agriculture, and nature-based solutions. This partnership will adapt those proven practices to the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) region, focusing on planting native and agroforestry species, surveying biodiversity, and implementing soil regeneration programs, in order to prepare the land for long-term ecological balance.
Ms. Jareeporn Jarukornsakul, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Group CEO of WHA Corporation PCL, said: “This green area and forest restoration initiative within our industrial estates is a significant milestone that reflects WHA Group’s strong commitment to sustainability. Through WHAID, we are not only building world-class industrial infrastructure but also shaping ecosystems that benefit people, businesses, and the environment. This year, we will begin with over 108 rai across three estates, planting more than 20,000 trees including native and agroforestry species, while preserving existing trees on-site. We plan to expand this model to other industrial estates in the coming years, creating shared value for all stakeholders and supporting WHA Group’s ‘Net Zero 2050’ target.”
Mom Luang Dispanadda Diskul, Secretary-General and CEO of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, added: “At Mae Fah Luang Foundation, we believe that true sustainability must go hand-in-hand with people and nature. This collaboration integrates ecological restoration with industrial development, setting a new model where economic growth and environmental balance can coexist. Building on more than 30 years of reforestation and biodiversity work at the Doi Tung Project, we will bring our expertise in nature-based solutions to WHA estates in Chonburi and Rayong. At WHA ESIE 2, for example, we will plant over 20 species of native and agroforestry trees, conserve more than 87 indigenous species, and apply natural forest-mimicking methods to enhance soil moisture, biodiversity, and ecosystem connectivity. We have also begun biodiversity baseline surveys to monitor ecological improvements over time. The benefits will be expanded beyond businesses to employees, customers, and surrounding communities who will enjoy these restored green spaces.”
This initiative represents more than an environmental project – it demonstrates WHA Group’s vision to create long-term shared value by enhancing carbon sequestration capacity, mitigating climate change, increasing biodiversity, and building community well-being. Together, WHA Group and the Mae Fah Luang Foundation aim to establish this project as a collaboration model between industry and social development organizations, scalable to other industrial zones in the future.
With this partnership, WHA Group reaffirms its leadership role in “shaping the future” of economic, social, and environmental sustainability under its guiding vision: “WHA: WE SHAPE THE FUTURE.”
