Braskem Siam, SCGC–Braskem Joint Venture, Selected by BOI for Thailand FastPass, Accelerates Asia's First Bio-Ethylene Project to Position Thailand as Sustainable Global Production Base
Braskem Siam, a joint venture between SCG Chemicals, or SCGC, a leading integrated polymer business for sustainability, and Braskem, a global leader in bioplastics from Brazil, announced progress in its bio-ethylene project. Most recently, the project has been selected by the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) as one of the pilot projects under the Thailand FastPass measure. This newly introduced mechanism by the public sector aims to unlock barriers facing large-scale investment projects, particularly those that play a critical role in driving the country's economic growth, enabling rapid investment execution. The bio-ethylene plant is expected to be completed in 2028, with a production capacity of 200,000 tons per year. The project aims to position Thailand as the first bio-ethylene production base in Asia, supporting growing global demand for environmentally friendly plastics while enhancing the country's export value.
Sakchai Patiparnpreechavud, Chief Executive Officer & President of SCG Chemicals, or SCGC, and Chairman of Braskem Siam Company Limited, said, "The bio-ethylene project represents a significant milestone in advancing Thailand's chemical industry toward sustainability, and it will strengthen the country's competitiveness in Asian and European markets, promote exports, support the ethanol industry, and generate tangible added value for Thai agricultural products. The company has continuously received strong promotion and support from the government, including approval to set up the plant as an Industrial Free Zone, as well as investment promotion from the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), among other measures. These supports have enabled the project to progress steadily as planned. Being selected by the BOI, in line with the resolution of the Economic Ministers Committee of the Cabinet, as a pilot project under the Thailand FastPass measure will further accelerate and streamline the project's execution."
Sakchai added "Currently, Braskem Siam is preparing to conclude the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) phase in the first quarter of 2026, with the Final Investment Decision (FID) expected in the second quarter of 2026. If all processes proceed as planned, the plant is expected to be completed in 2028. This facility will be Braskem's first bio-ethylene plant outside Brazil, with an annual production capacity of 200,000 tons of bio-ethylene to be used in the production of bioplastic resins under the "I'm green™" brand.
"Bio-ethylene is produced from ethanol derived from agricultural feedstock, replacing fossil-based ethylene. It is considered a solution with a negative carbon footprint, capable of reducing net carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere by up to one million tons per year. In addition, it is fully recyclable, same as conventional plastics, and can be used to manufacture a wide range of packaging products and everyday consumer goods. As such, it represents a compelling solution for manufacturers, brand owners, and consumers seeking sustainable alternatives, and serves as a key driver in advancing SCGC's ESG ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030, in line with its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050," Sakchai concluded.
